Defending Democracy: Criticising Victoria's Anti-Protest Laws

The Victorian Labor Government's proposed anti-protest laws represent a significant threat to democracy, civil liberties, and the right to dissent.

These sweeping measures, including bans on masks at protests, restrictions on public demonstrations near religious sites, and criminalisation of protest tactics like lock-on devices, are a direct attack on free speech and the safety of marginalised communities.

At Progressive Therapeutic Collective (PTC), we believe these changes undermine the values of justice, equity, and transparency that are essential to a thriving democracy.

Please sign our petition to Victoria Premier, Jacinta Allen, to demand the withdrawal of punitive anti-protest legislation

We, the undersigned, call on the Victorian Government to immediately withdraw the proposed anti-protest legislation that threatens democracy, civil liberties, and the safety of marginalized communities.

Protests are a cornerstone of a functioning democracy and have historically driven progress on critical issues, including gender equality, environmental protections, and civil rights. The proposed measures, including bans on masks, lock-on devices, and demonstrations near religious sites, disproportionately harm vulnerable individuals and undermine the right to dissent.

We urge Premier Jacinta Allan to prioritise dialogue, equity, and democratic freedoms over punitive measures that silence voices of dissent. Reconsider these draconian laws and commit to protecting the rights and safety of all Victorians.
