Sex work is valid work.

Progressive Therapeutic Collective (PTC) supports sex work as a legitimate profession, recognising its vital role in providing sexual and intimate services to a broad range of people.

We call for the decriminalisation of sex work in all states and territories to ensure the safety, rights, and dignity of sex workers and their clients.

The red umbrella is an international symbol for sex workers' rights, first used during a 2001 march in Venice, Italy. It represents resistance to discrimination and violence, advocating for the recognition of sex work as legitimate labor. The red color symbolizes beauty and strength.

Petition to Bill Shorten: Oppose the Removal of Sex Work from the NDIS

To: Minister Bill Shorten

We, the undersigned, strongly oppose your proposal to exclude sex work from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

This decision undermines the rights and well-being of people with disabilities who deserve comprehensive sexual support services as part of their holistic health and autonomy.

Why This Matters:

Right to Comprehensive Sexual Support: Individuals with disabilities have the right to make informed decisions about their own bodies, sexual health, and intimate relationships.

Excluding sex work from the NDIS impedes this right and limits disabled people’s access to essential support services.

Legal Precedent: The 2020 Federal Court ruling determined that specialised sexual services meet the "reasonable and necessary" criteria for NDIS participants. This legal precedent should be respected and maintained.

Minimal Financial Impact: Data indicates that the number of people using NDIS funds for sex work is minimal, making it a negligible cost relative to other services. Removing this support is not a solution to financial sustainability but a harmful measure that disregards the needs of people with disabilities.

Stigma Against Sex Work: Sex work is a legitimate profession that provides essential services. Excluding it from the NDIS furtherr stigmatises the profession and denies people with disabilities access to the support they need.

Our Demands:

Retract the Proposal: We call on you to retract your proposal to exclude sex work from the NDIS.

Collaborate with the Disability Community: Work with disability organisations to develop a comprehensive sexuality policy that respects and supports the rights and needs of people with disabilities.

Uphold Legal Rights: Ensure that the NDIS continues to provide funding for sexual services as deemed reasonable and necessary by the Federal Court ruling.

By signing this petition, we urge you to recognise and support the diverse needs of people with disabilities, including their right to access sexual services, and t0 ensure the NDIS remains a comprehensive and inclusive program.

Thank you to everyone who signed the petition.

It was submitted to Bill Shorten’s office on Friday, 19 July 2024.

We will continue our advocacy on this issue.

We encourage you to sign up to our mailing list (bottom of page), to keep updated.
