A quick summary of mutual aid

Mutual aid is community support focused on reciprocal assistance and collective well-being. It operates on cooperation, empathy, and shared responsibility.

Unlike traditional charity, it empowers and encourages direct support among community members.

This approach challenges systemic inequalities, promotes social justice, and prioritises marginalised voices, recognising true resilience exists within community.

A decolonial framework of support

From a decolonial perspective, mutual aid disrupts colonial legacies of exploitation and paternalism, which undermine Indigenous and marginalised communities' autonomy and resilience. By reclaiming traditional practices of communal support and resource sharing, mutual aid initiatives seek to dismantle oppressive systems and promote a more equitable distribution of power and resources.

This framework acknowledges the interconnectedness of all community members and the importance of collective action in achieving liberation and justice. Through mutual aid, communities can build stronger, more resilient networks that challenge dominant narratives and create sustainable, inclusive futures.
