Close Unit 18
Progressive Therapeutic Collective calls for the immediate closure of Unit 18 at Casuarina Prison. There are serious concerns for the mental health, wellbeing and safety of young people who are being detained with Unit 18 of the adult prison, Casuarina Prison.
Recently, a 16-year-old Indigenous young person died after attempting to take their own life.
We call on the Minister of Corrective Services to immediately close Unit 18 and to commit to the design and construction of a second youth custodial facility that meets the complex needs of different cohorts of young people.
Letter to Minister Papalia: 1 September 2024
This is the third time we have written to the Minister for Corrective Services over a deep concern for the young people and their welfare in Unit 18. Devastatingly, a second young person has committed suicide within the unit. We send our sincere condolences to their family, loved ones and commuity.
